Kraaifontein kickboxer aims to go pro

Overcoming adversity outside the ring has helped Carlo Schippers, 29, become the fighter he is inside the ring...

The memory of having the belt strapped around his waist, the crowd chanting his name and the flood of emotions pouring through him are still fresh for the newly crowned Pro Fitness Club (PFC) welterweight K-1 kickboxing champion, who has gone from one success to the next in 2014 and sees this as just the start of great things to come.

Prison Punch Up

“TRICORE,HOO HAA!”

Every time the crowds went silent ringside or a fighter from the Brackenfell stable needed some lifting, shouts of “Tricore, hoo haa!”pierced the quiet air or boomed over cheers for the opposition. The Tricore Soldiers,as the fighters from Tricore MMA,in Brackenfell Industria, are known, walked away with a big haul from the Pro Fitness Club (PFC) Fight Night at the weekend, held at the Goodwood Correctional Services Rec Hall. Both their title contenders,Carlo Schippers and Endi Pegado, ended the night with the PFC championship belts,in welterweight and lightweight, respectively, around their waists.Tricore lost only one fight on the night,an impressive account.

The Rise Of The Tricore Soldiers

Fighters from across the city will descend on Brackenfell this weekend when they take to the ring for Tricore Fight Night on Saturday November 15.

As he kneels down in the corner of the ring, eyes closed, head bowed, arm stretched out and hand placed on the nervous fighter before him,one gets the feeling of the bond of trust he has formed with his students. As the crowd comes to a dull silence, the shout of “Tricore soldiers, Hoohah!” reverberates through the halls. For sensei Ruhan Louw, 28, of Brackenfell, combat sports, and the teaching thereof, is as much a part of life as the rising and setting of the sun – all in a day’s work.
